The term "rubric" can be a bit confusing. It is best to think of it as a set of guidelines for what your final product needs to have in order to be considered successful. A rubric is typically broken down into different categories that correspond with various levels of skill or knowledge. For example, an essay rubric might include categories for "thoroughness," "clearness," and " persuasiveness."

What are Rubrics and How do they Work?
A rubric is a tool for judging student work that lists clear criteria for success in all parts of the work, whether it's written, spoken, or shown. It can be used to grade homework, participation in class, or overall grades.
There are two kinds of rubrics: analytical and holistic.
Holistic Rubrics
A holistic rubric is a single scale that takes into account all of the criteria to be used in the evaluation (e.g., clarity, organization, and mechanics). With a holistic rubric, the rater gives the student's work a single score (usually on a scale from 1 to 4 or 1 to 6 points) based on how it looks as a whole.
Analytical Rubrics
Provides the ability to evaluate the accomplishments of participants based on a variety of factors using just one rubric. You are able to provide an overall accomplishment by adding up the scores of the many criteria that are laid out in the form of a table. You may give certain criterion varying values, or weights.
